If you get an infinite black loading screen when launching We Were Here Expeditions: The FriendShip or if the game instantly shuts down or crashes after launching, we recommend you to try the solutions below.
- Make sure you meet the minimum requirements to play the game and are not using an integrated graphics card.
- If you use a laptop with a dedicated graphics card, make sure the correct graphics card is selected in your Windows app settings. It could be that the game accidentally launches with your integrated graphics card.
- Update your graphics drivers.
- For Windows N users: Make sure the Windows Media Feature Pack is installed for your version of Windows. This is required for the playback of certain videos within the game.
- Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed for your operating system. Information on how to do this can be found here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-install-the-latest-version-of-directx-d1f5ffa5-dae2-246c-91b1-ee1e973ed8c2
- By default we require DirectX 11 with the latest feature set to be installed. However, there is also a manual launch option available for DirectX 12. This might resolve some issues for certain older hardware. In steam you can do this by adding -force-d3d12 to your launch options.
(You can do this by going to the game in your Steam library and right clicking to go to “Properties”. Then in the “General” tab you can add launch options at the bottom. Make sure to remove this line again in case it didn't work.)
- It could be that the Microsoft Media Foundation is not installed on your machine or a newer version of Microsoft Media Foundation is required. To install the necessary libraries, please install the Media Feature Pack from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/mediafeaturepack for your version of Windows.
- Disable the “Optimize for Computer Performance” 3D setting in your Nvidia control panel if you use Nvidia.
- In your Nvidia control panel under "Manage 3D settings", change "Vertical Sync" to: "Use the 3D application setting".
